How to Adopt
STEP 1. APPLICATION PROCESS
We request that you print, complete and return our adoption application. Please note that it is mandatory that your existing pets are both up-to-date on their vaccinations and spayed/neutered.
You may choose to submit your application by mail, email or fax. Our contact information is listed at the bottom of this page.

STEP 2. INITIAL FOSTER PARENT CONTACT
While we are reviewing your application, you may call or email to inquire about any of the dogs or cats that are available for adoption. It is important that you inform us that you have submitted your application, and when emailing about one of the animals PLEASE GIVE FULL NAME, PHONE NUMBER, CITY AND STATE.
STEP 3. HOME VISIT
While we are processing your application, the foster parent or another volunteer with CARE will arrange to visit your home. The purpose of this visit is to verify any information you have listed on your application (i.e., fenced-in yard, crate, etc.) and to ensure that we are matching you with the correct pet for your home environment. In some cases for dog adoptions, the foster parent may bring the dog in which you are interested to your home.
The adoption process CANNOT be completed until a home visit has been performed.
STEP 4. MEETING THE AVAILABLE ANIMALS
Once your application has been approved, you will be invited to meet the animal of your choice. These dogs and cats are in foster homes in both the Carterville area in Southern Illinois and in the Batavia area in the Far West Chicago Suburbs. You will be expected to visit with your potential adopted animal in their foster home. (We will try to faciliate visits between our two CARE locations in Illinois if the dog in which you are interested is at the distant location. Due to the stress traveling generally puts on cats, we do not do cat transport.) All members of the family - including any family dogs - should attend this initial meeting since we consider this to be a family decision.

STEP 5. ADOPTION CONTRACT AND ADOPTION FEE
Finally, to complete the adoption, an adoption contract must be signed and the appropriate adoption fee will be charged. Please note, we do not make money on our adoption fees. This fee serves to partially reimburse CARE for the medical costs invested in your new pet and to allow us to rescue more animals in need.
